The human spirit can endure a sick body but who can bear a crushed spirit. Proverbs 18:14
Which do you think would bring you down more, mental sickness or physical sickness? Being crushed in spirit or a weak body?
One of the first beatitudes says “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”
Our spirits bring us down sometimes because of the constant disasters that life brings our way. Sometimes we feel like it’s one after the other and never ending and we start to lose hope because we feel we are not getting our answers.
Let me tell a story of a woman who lived a long time ago and received nothing but discouragement from people who were supposed to be supportive. A broken family where there was almost always fighting. She was even misunderstood at church by the priest where she would come back to seek solace. She had almost reached a phase of darkness with nothing to look forward to, but she held on to hope. When she did not have words to pray, the spirit intervened on her behalf. Samuel was the result of the prayer and wait of a praying mother.
We may not understand why we are going through this right now. We may find the words of people hurtful as Hannah did. We may have a lot of fights going on in our house. We might have absolutely no clue why floods or drought occur. We may not even understand why or how showers of blessings are provided to us.
Here’s where we need to look at Hannah’s life. After she prayed, her prayers did not change God’s plan but it changed Hannah’s heart. She based her prayer on God’s grace. She left her burden with God and trusted God to help her keep her promise even though she knew how hard it was going to be to let go of her one and only son.
The wait period of Hannah’s life was a tiny detour from the path of her blessing which didn’t seem so when she was going through it.
Let’s trust God through our detours that it is to change us to what he wants us to be.
Lord, I cannot help myself. I need you to solve my problems.
