What is Faith, Hope and Love?
They are vehicles that drive us closer to God. Each possessing its own superpower, all three work in union to move mountains, to change the world and to create miracles. Earliest written records of it’s existence dates back to the first Letter of the radical, St. Paul, to the Corinthians where he says,
“Three things will last forever–faith, hope, and love.”
1 Cor 13:13a (NLT Version)
But we know that these three have been around forever. So let’s take a closer look at what they are.
This is the first vehicle of the three vehicles that is fuelled by belief. It has the power to go beyond space & time. It challenges the intellect and performs acts of supernatural calibre. As humans, it is easy to drive this vehicle, provided you bring your own fuel.
Second to faith, this is fuelled by faith. It is the source of encouragement that allows you to hold onto promises even when things seems unlikely. Hope refreshes the memory and has the power to let you see beyond the physical and witness the glory of the unknown future.
“But the greatest of these is Love.”
This is the third and the most powerful vehicle. It self driven and completely controlled by the driver. Love challenges the will. It has the power to overcome hate and other unpleasantness to achieve forgiveness and give life meaning. Jesus always advocated love, even on the cross.
‘We remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labour prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.’
– 1 Thes 1:3
Theologically, faith, hope and love are virtues that are instrumental in freeing the spirit from all its attachments. Like St. John of the Cross wrote, faith empties the intellect, hope frees memory and love liberates the will. Inspired by these virtues, we hope to bring life new meaning and encourage soulful living.
